This may surprise you, but Scottish singer-songwriter Al Stewart is not a one-hit wonder. He had a second top 10 hit on the Hot 100 with his 1978 single, “Time Passages.” However, “Year Of The Cat” remains his most famous song. He co-wrote it with keyboardist Peter Wood, who played on Stewart’s album of the same name. Released in October 1976, Year Of The Cat went Platinum in the U.S., largely if not entirely off the success of the title track. But the rest of the album is great too. “On The Border” was a very minor hit, but it’s a good song with some energy to it.
Overall, I really loved “Year Of The Cat,” both the song and the whole album. This is the perfect album to put on and relax by a fireplace on a cold autumn day. It’s jazzy, it’s fun yet gentle, and Al’s songwriting complements his Bowie-like voice. Plus, Alan Parsons of all people produced it, so the production is very bright and pretty. A strong thumbs up from me.
